(almost) time for fresh produce at the community garden

Queen Mary Community Garden, West Keith Road, North Vancouver, BC, Canada

“How might children become involved in community or global projects related to social justice?”

The Queen Mary community garden sits on the edge of West Keith Road very close to my home. The walk is a short one, lined with trees on either side and provides ample opportunities to people-watch. Once at the garden, you’re welcomed by sounds of bees buzzing, shovels scraping, and chatter from gardening enthusiasts sprinkled with occasional children’s voices – proudly showing off their fresh produce, or the first tomato or squash of the season.

These walks fill me with a sense of deep gratitude to my community, where people come together to grow not just out of passion, but also out of care for their fellow neighbours. The garden is managed by The Edible Garden Project is responsible for volunteers and engagement with the community, and also regularly takes in gardening enthusiasts. You can often find students from Queen Mary Community School that sits adjacent to the plot, coming in for short gardening adventures and science-based activities.
